Lena had the whole Valentine’s Day planned: Reservations at Marcus’s favorite restaurant. Tickets to the show he’d mentioned. A thoughtful gift.
But when she picked him up, she could see it immediately: He was exhausted. Stressed. Running on empty.
At the restaurant, he was there but not THERE. Checking his phone. Mind elsewhere.
“Hey,” she said, reaching across the table. “Do you actually want to be here?”
He looked up, surprised. “What?”
“I made all these plans. But I’m not sure you want this right now.”
He exhaled—this long, deep breath he’d apparently been holding all day. “Can we just... go home? Order in? Just be?”
They cancelled the show. Ordered pizza. Sat on the couch.
And for the first time all day, he was actually PRESENT. Looking at her. Talking. Laughing.
“This is the best Valentine’s gift,” he said. “You just... being here.”
She smiled. “That’s the double 8 energy.”
“What?”
“Presence over presents.”
